Culturally centred care: empowering African youth and families

This presentation will explore how community-driven and culturally-centred approaches can enhance treatment outcomes for African youth and families impacted by Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) and mental health challenges. Nyachan Nyak, founder and managing director of Nas Recovery Centre (NRC), will share evidence-based strategies that leverage interdisciplinary collaboration and community knowledge to empower clients, reduce stigma, and improve engagement. By focusing on cross-partnerships between community therapists, service users, and AOD services, this presentation aligns with the conference theme “From Challenges to Solutions: Responding to a Changing World,” showcasing how innovative, culturally responsive care models can address emerging sector challenges. Practical tools for day-to-day collaborative practice will also be presented.
