Treaty | A historic step forward: VAADA walks alongside First Peoples

Treaty: It’s Here

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, together with the Victorian Government, has tabled Australia’s first statewide Treaty Bill in Parliament.

For decades, First Peoples have called for Treaty. We stand one step closer to a future where decisions about Aboriginal communities, cultures and lands are made by Aboriginal people.

VAADA is proud to walk alongside First Peoples on this journey. Through our Pledge for Treaty, we commit to:

  • Collaborating with Aboriginal leaders to establish an Aboriginal Advisory Committee
  • Promoting awareness of First Peoples’ histories, cultures, and ways of healing across the AOD sector
  • Advocating for the implementation of the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Partnerships Agreement and recommendations from the Yoorrook Justice Commission

We recognise that substance use among First Peoples is not a failing, it is rooted in trauma caused by genocide, being forced off country and removed from culture, community and family. Treaty is an opportunity to embed self-determination and deliver healing and practical solutions at the community level.

This is a once-in-a-generation moment. We invite our members and networks to walk with us, stand in solidarity, and celebrate this historic step toward justice, healing, and a better future for all.
