The critical role of lived experience in FASD prevention

Alcohol use during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The “Every Moment Matters” (EMM) campaign developed by FARE provides evidence-based information on alcohol, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Lived experience advisory groups from NOFASD Australia are instrumental to the success of the campaign. Lived experience advocates are involved in the development and implementation of the EMM campaign, utilising their expertise to shape the campaign and lead the development of information resources for women at high risk of alcohol exposed pregnancies, AOD and out-of-home care workers. These workers play a critical role in providing support and addressing stigma. Engaging lived experience advocates is the cornerstone for creating an inclusive and effective approach to FASD prevention, challenging stereotypes, and enhancing meaningful behaviour change around alcohol use.
