Substance use coercion in a family violence context

The AOD sector, along with the ever-changing world, is facing new challenges. One of these continually evolving challenges is the Family Violence crisis. This presentation explores the critical relationship between Family Violence, coercive control, and substance use.

We will explore how substance use can be weaponised by people who use violence to gain control and cause harm. We will utilise a pre-recorded roleplay to identify what some of these behaviours might look like, and how we can assess risk and safety plan with our consumers.

The presentation will emphasise the importance of AOD clinicians understanding the Multi Agency Risk Assessment and Management framework alongside the Information Sharing Schemes, as mechanisms to support victim survivors, and to keep people using violence in view and accountable.
We will highlight the need for integrated approaches that tackle both coercive control and substance-related issues.
