August 31 2020 marks the 20th year of the International Overdose Awareness Day. Sadly, every year thousands of people die as a result of opioid overdose. Yet these deaths are preventable.

This event will be hosted online by the Burnet Institute and present some of the latest work on responses to opioid overdose that is being conducted by the Institute and its collaborators across Australia and internationally.

This one-hour event will feature three speakers from the Behaviours and Health Risks Program at the Institute. The program will run as follows:

1. Setting the scene, international patterns in opioid overdose: Amanda Roxburgh
2. The Stop Overdose Safely initiative, a WHO/UNODC program to scale-up take-home naloxone in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine: Paul Dietze (on behalf of the SOS project team)
3. Opioid overdose deaths in Australia – are we doing enough? Amanda Roxburgh
4. Scaling up take-home naloxone across Australia: Penny Hill (on behalf of the national naloxone reference group)
