About the program

The Medically Supervised Injecting Room is an anonymous service providing supervised injecting, on site clinical support, and access to a range of health and social services. The service plays a critical role in reducing overdose related harm, improving access to care, and supporting people who use drugs with dignity and respect.

About the role

As a Harm Reduction Practitioner, you will support clients before, during, and after episodes of injecting, with a strong focus on safety, engagement, and connection to health and welfare services. You will work closely with the MSIR Nursing team and broader harm reduction team to deliver trauma informed, non judgemental care.

Key responsibilities may include:
• Engaging with clients and supporting safer injecting practices
• Monitoring client wellbeing and responding to alerts and emergencies
• Providing health education, brief interventions, and referrals
• Supporting overdose response, incident de escalation, and harm reduction interventions
• Maintaining accurate client records and data collection
• Participating in outreach, needle syringe provision, and community based responses as required

About you

You are committed to harm reduction and social justice and bring a respectful, calm, and person centred approach to working with people who use drugs.

You will bring:
• Qualifications in Welfare, Social Sciences, Psychology, Public Health or a related field
• Experience working with people who may present with complex and challenging behaviours
• Experience in needle and syringe programs, AOD services, crisis or community based services
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution
• An understanding of the health, social, and legal issues impacting people who inject drugs
• The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable but not essential:
• CPR and First Aid certification
• Experience working in a trauma informed model of care
• Experience in psychosocial assessment, referral, or crisis support
