ABOUT US

Gateway Health is a community health service providing health and welfare services to individuals, families and communities across Northeast Victoria and parts of southern New south Wales. We are a not-for-profit Company limited by guarantee and a registered Community Health Service under the Health Services Act 1988 (Vic).

The organisation employs over 380 staff providing a range of primary health and community services across the Ovens Murray region in Northeast Victoria and parts of Southern New South Wales. Gateway Health serves all people and is committed to improving individual and population health outcomes. We do this by providing health care and support to individuals and communities in times of need, and by actively working with our partners to address the social and environmental determinants of health.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you a passionate and experienced Registered Nurse looking to be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team focused on driving positive outcomes for individuals experiencing opioid use disorder (OUD). Join our MERPS (Multidisciplinary Enhanced Rural Pharmacotherapy) Program – a vital part of our comprehensive AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) services.

The MERPS Program delivers opioid agonist therapy (OAT) in line with national and state clinical guidelines, aiming to reduce the health, social, and economic harms associated with opioid dependence. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of people and their families navigating substance use and recovery.

As a Pharmacotherapy Registered Nurse (PRN), you will:

  • Provide holistic, client-centred care to individuals with OUD.
  • Work within your RN Scope of Practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment plans tailored to each client’s needs.
  • Monitor pharmacotherapy medications for efficacy and safety, educate clients on medication use, and manage adverse drug reactions.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical and mental health assessments, risk assessments, and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of AOD professionals to ensure a coordinated and integrated care approach.
  • Deliver evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions including harm reduction, relapse prevention, and psychoeducation.
  • Support ongoing service development through education, leadership, and input into policy and procedural improvement.

The Pharmacotherapy Registered Nurse (PRN) position at Gateway Health will transition into a Nurse Practitioner Candidate position starting in 2026. Gateway Health will support the successful candidate throughout the Nurse Practitioner masters and candidacy process.

Applicants must have advanced practice experience in addiction care and opioid pharmacotherapy and be willing to begin their Nurse Practitioner candidacy in 2026. Candidates must meet the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines for applying for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Current general registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse in Australia with no conditions or restrictions.
  2. A minimum of three years (5,000 hours) of advanced practice experience within the last six years in the specialty.
  3. Completion of an NMBA-approved Master's course in nursing, with endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner in the relevant clinical specialty.

Applicants must also possess the required postgraduate qualifications and advanced practice experience to enter an NMBA-approved Nurse Practitioner Master's course.
