DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Training  \nRecognising and Working with Cognitively Impaired Clients in Alcohol and Other Drug Settings\, \npresented by Dr James Gooden\, Sarah Bussell & Georgia Bolt \n\n\nWorking with cognitively impaired clients can be a significant challenge\, particularly when access to assessment services and resources are limited. Cognitive difficulties may arise from a range of aetiologies including acquired brain injury\, mental health\, substance use\, or neurodevelopmental differences and together\, this can have a cumulative and adverse impact on treatment outcomes and recovery.\n\n\nThis workshop will provide practical strategies for working with clients who present with or have concerns regarding cognitive difficulties. In particular\, this workshop will cover four main themes: \n\nRecognising cognitive impairment\nUnderlying aetiologies across the lifespan\nSupporting clients with cognitive impairment\nReferral pathways: When might assessment be indicated?\n\nPresenters: \n\nSarah Bussell is a Clinical Neuropsychology Registrar at Turning Point Statewide Services where she provides secondary consultation and neuropsychological assessment for adults with significant substance use histories\, collaborating with consumers\, referrers\, and care teams to guide care planning and formulation. Her work centres on valuing consumer perspectives and experiences whilst considering differential diagnoses and applying evidence-based strategies/supports to enhance everyday functioning. Across both community outpatient and inpatient settings\, she also has experience in rehabilitation\, complex discharge planning\, and co-occurring factors. She completed her Master of Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology) at the University of Melbourne in 2023 and is committed to translating neuropsychological knowledge into meaningful support for both consumers and healthcare teams.\n\nGeorgia Bolt is a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist working at Turning Point and Austin Health providing neuropsychological assessment and consultation for adults with a range of co-occurring neurodevelopmental\, neurological\, medical\, mental health\, substance-related\, and neurodegenerative conditions within acute inpatient and community outpatient settings. She works collaboratively with clients/consumers\, their supporters\, and other multi-disciplinary clinicians across the healthcare sector to inform comprehensive formulations\, differential diagnosis\, and guide future management\, including addressing cognitive\, behaviour\, and decision-making capacity related issues\, and\, where indicated\, supporting clients/consumers to access disability supports.Georgia was the recipient of the inaugural Maureen Molloy prize in Clinical Neuropsychology at University of Melbourne and is completing a PhD at Turning Point Eastern Health Clinical School/Monash University investigating a novel personalised mHealth cognitive intervention for middle-older adults drinking at hazardous/harmful levels in the community. She has authored academic manuscripts and co-authored a book chapter on Cognitive Assessment\, Management and Training in AOD settings\, presenting at national and international conferences.\n\nDr James Gooden is a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist and clinician researcher with based at the Turning Point Addiction Neuropsychology Service in Richmond\, Victoria. His case load includes individuals experiencing a high degree of clinical complexity including comorbid traumatic or acquired brain injury\, alcohol and polysubstance use\, mental health difficulty\, complex trauma\, forensic and psychosocial issues. DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Training  \nIntroduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for\nAlcohol and Other Drug Workers \nCognitive Behaviour Therapy has evolved over the years and is a most favourably reviewed treatment approach. There is much evidence for the effectiveness of CBT with a range of Alcohol and Other Drugs issues. In recent years CBT has expanded its focus to include third wave approaches. These approaches seek to blend traditional CBT principles with concepts new to cognitive-behavioural therapies such as mindfulness and acceptance. \nIn this introductory workshop you will build your capacity in applying evidence-based interventions that work on the underlying processes that support behavioral change. You will discover how\, when and why to apply a best practice cognitive\, behavioral or emotion focused approach. \nThis workshop will  introduce you to a range of models\, techniques and interventions to help your clients to change negative thought patterns\, develop coping strategies\, and improve emotional wellbeing. It will be a practical and interactive workshop where you will be introduced to a range of tools\, worksheets and relapse prevention strategies that you can use collaboratively with your client to implement recovery-oriented practice.Presenter: Carmela Ciavarella has a degree with honours in Sociology and has been working within the mental health sector for over 10 years. She has worked in a variety of mental health services including adolescent\, adult and psycho-geriatric inpatient units. She has worked within the community/ residential services supporting people to recover and engage in independent living. She is passionate about the significant positive impact that mental health pharmacists have in ensuring optimal\, patient-centred\, and evidence-based treatments. \nLisa Jarvie is a registered nurse passionate about contributing to developing robust processes that deliver client-led goals and experiences\, increasing self-determination in healthcare. With a background in statewide program management\, chronic pain\, aged care\, and culture change\, Lisa came to the AOD sector after completing a Master of Addictive Behaviours in which she completed a thesis in pain\, sleep\, and substance use. \nLee Ann has lived experience of substance use disorder and mental health challenges. She holds qualifications in Community Services\, Mental Health and AOD\, as well as Child Youth and Families. In addition\, she has completed multiple Peer Worker training programs and is a certified SMART Recovery Facilitator. Over the past 3.5 years\, Lee Ann has worked as a Youth Residential Carer\, supporting children living in Out of Home Care. She also works as a Peer Support Worker with the Hamilton Centre’s Eastern team and has recently joined the Central team as a Peer Educator. Lee Ann is a strong advocate for challenging stigma and promotes the use of therapeutic language and trauma-informed care in all aspects of her work.
