SUMMARY:Solving the Alcohol Puzzle: Pharmacotherapy for Alcohol

SUMMARY:Building Recovery Capital: Translating Social Influence into Adolescent Addiction Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr Emily Hennesy\, Associate Director of the Recovery Research Institute &\nDirector of Biostatistics at the Recovery Research Institute\nStable recovery during adolescence requires more than the cessation of substance use—it requires access to social\, psychological\, and community resources collectively known as recovery capital. \nDr. Hennessy’s research bridges developmental science\, social network theory\, and implementation research to understand and strengthen the social foundations of recovery among youth. Her research examines recovery not as an individual journey\, but as a fundamentally social process shaped by peers\, families\, and communities. Drawing on mixed-methods\, observational\, and community-based approaches\, this presentation will discuss how insights from this work inform the design of adolescent-recovery-oriented systems of care and new network-based interventions that translate social influence into measurable recovery outcomes. The goal is to advance an empirically grounded\, socially informed science of recovery that improves treatment outcomes and equity for young people affected by substance use. \nDate: Thursday 6th November 2025\nVenue: Online\nTime: 1:00pm – 2:00pm AEST\nCost: Free\nRegister: click here to register

SUMMARY:Criminalisation vs Care: Experiences and responses to methamphetamine use in Australia
DESCRIPTION:Methamphetamine is one of the most used substances among people who have contact with Australia’s criminal legal system. However\, our understanding of the experiences and drivers of criminal legal system involvement for people who use methamphetamine is limited. In this webinar\, Shelley Walker will present findings of a qualitative study about the harms associated with the criminalisation of methamphetamine use on rural Victorians who smoke methamphetamine and Michael Curtis will present on the incidence and correlates of imprisonment in a cohort of Victorians who smoke methamphetamine. Rebecca McKetin will then provide a brief update of the evidence for treating methamphetamine use disorder\, including progress towards pharmacotherapy options and innovations in other evidence-based treatment options.

SUMMARY:VSURF: Public amenity and the North Richmond Medically Supervised Injecting Room - Bianca Whiteside
DESCRIPTION:The Victorian Substance Use Research Forum (VSURF) invites you to attend the August Seminar where Bianca Whiteside (Deakin University and Burnet Institute) will present her work examining public amenity around the North Richmond medically supervised injecting room (MSIR). \nTo register for either online or in-person attendance\, please email: michael.curtis@burnet.edu.au \nAbstract: The North Richmond Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) has a legislated aim to improve public amenity in the surrounding area. Two extensive reviews during its trial tenure have reported no improvement of public amenity in the area around the MSIR. However\, there is limited data to support this claim. We aimed to document perceived and actual levels of public amenity in the North Richmond area to address the lack of evidence. This presentation will present the results of 1) a scoping review examining definitions of public amenity used in research examining in the impacts drug consumption room\, 2) preliminary results of 24-months of structured observations undertaken local vicinity of the MSIR\, and 3) preliminary results of interviews with local residents and traders who have lived and worked in North Richmond to understand their perception of public amenity in North Richmond. \nBio: Bianca Whiteside began her PhD in July 2022 as a recipient of a Deakin Burnet Research Partnership Scholarship. Bianca’s PhD investigates the link between public amenity and drug consumption rooms\, with a focus on the North Richmond medically supervised injecting room (MSIR) in Melbourne.

SUMMARY:Best Practices for AOD Services in Media Engagement and Lived and Living Experience Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Lived and living experience of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use are frequently featured in media reporting. While these accounts can challenge stereotypes\, media coverage often stigmatises AOD issues\, leading to negative outcomes for those involved. \nThe event showcases a new resource developed by AADC to support best practices in AOD services when approached by the media for access to lived and living experience. \nIt also features a panel of experts discussing AOD\, stigma\, media portrayals and in the context of an upcoming Federal election\, how the risk to those sharing their lived and living experience stories can be minimised when participating in sector advocacy.

SUMMARY:Talking Point: Gender differences in substance use disorders: Implications for treatment\, presented by Dr Shelly Greenfield\, MD\, MPH.
DESCRIPTION:Gender differences in substance use disorders: Implications for treatment\, presented by Dr Shelly Greenfield\, MD\, MPH. \nThis presentation will review trends in the epidemiology of gender differences in the prevalence of substance use and substance use disorders in the U.S. . There will then be presentation of the evidence for the telescoping course of alcohol use disorders in females and a brief review of the physiology contributing to this illness trajectory. \nThere will be a brief overview of the risks for substance use disorders in women and the role of gender-specific therapies in treating women with substance use disorders.
