Job Description

An exciting opportunity to be part of the Goulburn Valley  Health's trial site to establish and provide a short-term recovery and detoxication Sobering Service as part of Victorian Government’s Public Intoxification Reform Trial. Shepparton is one of four trial sites across Victoria.
The Registered Nurse - Public Intoxication Response Service is responsible for providing high level nursing
care to persons admitted to the Sobering Service. The objective of sobering service is to provide and
maintain a safe and caring environment in which intoxicated (from alcohol and other drugs) people can sober up. The Registered Nurse will provide :
• Monitoring and support to participants through the sobering up process
• Nursing and community support interventions to a high standard
• Clinical and physical risk management/mitigation strategies
• Offer safe, short-term access to amenities and clinical supervision that supports a safe sobering
• Facilitated access for the participant to appropriate alcohol and other drug treatment options or
support services
The Sobering Service will operate from Thursday evening through to Monday afternoon and be staffed
across the 24 hours

Key Selection Criteria

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, to problem solve and act calmly with confidence in
challenging situations
• Be able to provide support and direction to staff working under your supervision on shifts
• Demonstrated understanding and implementation of appropriate procedures and strategies to deal
with people in crisis i.e. intoxication, overdose, psychosis, anxiety, duress, reaction to trauma, family
violence, suicidal or threatening behaviour etc.
• Commitment to the GV Health Values of Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Teamwork
and Ethical Behaviour.
• Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, decision making, advocacy and negotiation skills with a
flexible approach to demand management and problem-solving challenges
• Experience in delivering services to people from diverse backgrounds including culturally and
linguistically diverse, LGBTIQA+ and First Nations communities
• Competent computer skills at an intermediate level, specifically Windows based packages
• Evidence of full immunisation against COVID-19 and Influenza where mandated
• Post registration qualifications or experience in alcohol and other drugs, mental health, other
relevant clinical nursing
• Clinical experience of supporting people in withdrawal
