About the role

The AOD Proactive Overdose Response Worker provides onsite and outreach harm reduction services, health promotion, education and service linkages to individuals and groups and to services. Improving health, well-being and inclusion amongst People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) is the key purpose of this position.

Your daily duties will vary but your main focus will include:

  • Assertive outreach and engagement of consumers who use drugs, providing access to Needle and Syringe Program, BBV and STI treatment and prevention, Naloxone and other harm reduction and safer using education, drug overdose prevention and response.
  • Maximising opportunities to interact with clients in order to provide health navigation, support, referral and social connection.
  • Facilitating appropriate responses to changing trends of drug use.
  • Provide education sessions to individuals and to groups to encourage safer drug use.

About you:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. alcohol and other drugs, community development, social work), Certificate IV or higher, with minimum two years relevant work experience. A lived experience of substance use is highly desirable.
  • Capacity to engage and assess client need to provide appropriate information and referrals about/to health and other community services.
  • Sound knowledge of the health and social issues for people who use drugs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction as it applies to people who use drugs (PWUD).
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of harm reduction and the ability to translate them into practical strategies.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and negotiation and the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
