Job Description

The Salvation Army is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug services.  We offer a range of services including Harm Reduction and Primary Health Services as well as a range of treatment types (including residential treatment centres, community-based support programs, counselling and withdrawal management services). The Victorian Government new health based response to public intoxication sees the launch of a trial Sobering Service within the City of Yarra. This service is to ensure the right programs and systems are in place to help people who are drunk in public get the support they need to stay safe. The health based response is underpinned by the following four components:

  • Community outreach
  • Transport
  • Places of safety
  • Health and social care pathways and broader prevention strategies

The Salvation Army will be working in partnership to provide the Service with the City of Yarra, Victorian Government, local health services and Aboriginal organisations. The Salvation Army wants to acknowledge the legislative change to public intoxication was adopted in response to the tireless lobbying and advocacy by the family of Yorta Yorta woman, Tanya Day.

We currently have a new and exciting opportunity for a Clinical Lead (Nurse) Residential Sober Service to work within our AOD – Harm Reduction and Health Services located in the City of Yarra. This service supports people presenting as intoxicated / providing health supports to people that present as intoxicated/assessing and monitoring the health of people that present as intoxicated.

The Clinical Lead will manage a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality comprehensive primary health care and harm reduction services to people attending the residential place of safety.

You will successfully

  • Ensure all aspects of service delivery align with The Salvation Army’s (TSA) alcohol and other drug (AOD) model of care, harm reduction and primary health care services
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure positive relationships are developed and maintained
  • Support the Harm Reduction Services Manager to identify risks
  • Support the delivery of clinical services such as patient health assessments and health management plans in partnership with existing GP, nursing, and other clinical staff
  • Ensure patients are receiving integrated, whole of team responses to their health needs

This position reports to the Harm Reduction Services Manager and is located in the City of Yarra. This is a full-time position fixed term for 12 months, with possible extension depending on funding arrangements.

The Salvation Army is subject to public health orders. You will be required to provide evidence of vaccine status dependent on requirements.

Key Selection Criteria

You will have

  • Div 1 RN with current AHPRA registration
  • Experience and competency in delivering accessible Primary Health Care, AOD and Harm Reduction Services.
  • Strong understanding of the health and AOD harm reduction needs of people who use drugs, people who are experiencing homelessness, people who engage in street-based sex work or people experiencing discrimination, stigma or issues accessing health services due to other reasons.
  • Excellent organisation and administrative skills with capacity to balance workload and determine priorities while also addressing the needs of a high volume, often crisis orientated environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the leadership of staff with strong verbal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain CPD points as required by AHPRA
  • Willingness to provide on-call support as part of a roster
  • A current VIC Drivers Licence
  • Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia
