Gateway Health and Odyssey House Victoria are excited to be partnering in the roll out of a new 24/7 Alcohol and Other Drugs Residential Rehabilitation Service that will be based in Wangaratta supporting our Community and existing Services in our region.
As such, we will be recruiting to various positions between July through to September for this exciting development.
The Senior AOD Therapist performs duties of a specialised nature and supports the Senior Practitioner in implementing programs based on clinical best practice within a Therapeutic Community (TC) to residents, families, significant others and staff.
The role is an integral component contributing to the effective operations of the Therapeutic Community requiring sound clinical knowledge with a lead function in clinical design and delivery and clinical expertise support to the therapeutic community.
Certificate IV in AOD or equivalent, or willingness to undertake within the first 12 months of employment.
The role will support all staff in fostering the Therapeutic Community process of mutual self-help to guide the resident / client through a process of self-discovery and change. The Senior Therapist will ensure that every resident in the community obtains relevant individual and group counselling whilst enhancing and promoting self-help as a concept and using the social environment to maximise peer influences by encouraging residential community teachings rather than directly instructing.
The Wangaratta Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Residential Rehabilitation Service is a new state-wide centre operated by Gateway Health (GH) in partnership with Odyssey House Victoria (OVH). The service is located at Greta Road, Wangaratta. The centre is a 30-bed facility providing a ‘Therapeutic Community (TC)’ residential AOD program for adults experiencing harm and significant problems relating to their AOD use.
The model of care used in this Program is underpinned by the Victorian Department of Health AOD Treatment Principles which have as their foundation a philosophy of harm reduction and recovery orientation.
This program objectives are:
- Ensure capability and capacity to deliver a sustainable high-quality service
- Provide guiding principles that aim to achieve the best possible health outcomes for people who use AOD services at Gateway Health
- Provide a model for AOD staff that supports best practice and informs expectations for the treatment/management of people with substance use concerns
- Monitor new developments in AOD treatments to be informed by evidence and guided by models of good practice.
- Ensure services are underpinned by the Victorian AOD Treatment Principles and those of a Therapeutic Community (TC).
- Enhanced service development, evaluation and review.

Key Selection Criteria
- Ability to behave in accordance to the Gateway Health Values of We Care, We work together, We achieve, We learn, We innovate.
- Qualifications in health, welfare, behavioural or social sciences or extensive experience in the substance use, mental health, welfare or youth fields.
- Certificate IV in AOD or equivalent, or willingness to undertake within the first 12 months of employment.
- Demonstrated experience working therapeutically with clients that have issues relating to alcohol and other drugs.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, be open to giving and receiving feedback, and recognise and resolve interpersonal conflict.
- Demonstrated experience and / or knowledge of therapeutic communities and service delivery with a strong theoretical and practice base in the principles of recovery.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships both clinically and professionally
- An understanding of issues relevant to people with co-occurring mental illness and substance use problems
- High level interpersonal, engagement, communication, problem-solving and negotiation skills with a demonstrated ability to work with a consultative approach to addressing issues.
- Current Australian Drivers Licence or accepted International Drivers licence
- Confirmation of your right to work in Australia, Satisfactory National/International Police and Victorian Working with Children Checks must be provided prior to commencement.
- Empathy for those whose lives have been affected by problematic alcohol and other drug use/ and or mental health disorders
- First Aid Certificate
- Recovery experience within a therapeutic community or residential setting.
