About this event

Online BreakThrough sessions go for 1 hour and cover topics relevant to families who are dealing with a loved one’s drug use. Some content will be specific to substance misuse, other material will cover addictive behaviours more broadly.

It’s important to note that BreakThrough is an education program and while each session includes group discussion about a particular topic or theme, people requiring more intensive support in relation to their own circumstances are strongly encouraged to contact Family Drug and Gambling Help on 1300 660 068 to speak to a trained volunteer with personal experience of a loved one’s drug use.

Participants registering for online sessions of BreakThrough will be sent a confirmation email with information about how to join the session.

*Please note that BreakThrough is based in Melbourne, Australia and this event will take place in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

About “Emotional Impact of Addiction AND Recovery for Everyone”

This session combines two topics – firstly exploring how Family Members can find themselves experiencing a range of emotions such as grief, guilt and shame, trauma, and over time ‘compassion fatigue’ when their loved one is caught up in a toxic relationship with addiction. Becoming aware of these states and practicing the ways in which we can self care, can lead to much better outcomes for ourselves and our loved one. The second topic focuses on the recovery process – both for people seeking treatment for addiction, and, for their families – investing in their own self-care and in rebuilding their lives.
