Employment opportunity: Medication Support & Recovery Service counsellor – Inspiro Community Health Service

The Opportunity
We are seeking a passionate and suitably qualified AOD Counsellor to join our Medication Support and Recovery Service in a part time (4-days per week) capacity This is a fixed term position until June 2019. The MSRS Counsellor will work within the broader Alcohol and Drug team at Inspiro Community Health Service and will be supported by the AOD team, Clinical Counselling Lead and Manager.

Responsibilities
The MSRS Counsellor will deliver evidence-based therapeutic counselling and assessment to individuals and families affected by pharmaceuticals. Therapeutic interventions may include brief interventions, psychoeducation/overdose awareness, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family counselling/family single sessions, harm reduction and relapse prevention. The MSRS Counsellor will work closely with other clinicians and staff in the team, including specialist nurses, peer support workers, AOD clinicians and the wider community health service system including allied health clinicians and GPs. There will be a requirement to co-locate from Inspiro sites to be negotiated with the successful incumbent.

Skills and Experience required

  • Tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work, mental health, counselling or related fields with specific qualifications and/or experience in Alcohol and Other Drugs
  • Demonstrated understanding of AOD and dual diagnosis treatment principles and AOD interventions
  • Demonstrated understanding of pharmaceutical overdose, pharmacotherapy options and harm reduction principles
  • Demonstrated service coordination practices with internal and external service providers and the ability to provide holistic care for clients presenting with a broad range of substance use and psychosocial needs
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team

Skills and Experience required

  • Diploma of AOD preferred, but minimum requirement is Certificate IV in AoD working towards Diploma qualification
  • Demonstrated understanding of current Australian alcohol and drug treatment philosophy of “harm minimisation” is essential
  • Demonstrated understanding of AoD and dual diagnosis treatment principles and AoD interventions
  • Extensive experience in the provision of counselling services with AoD clients with complex needs, including clients within the criminal justice system.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate treatment plans and implement interventions with clients / families, addressing their range of alcohol and/or other drug use issues, including clients with complex psychosocial needs.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Capacity to develop collaborative and productive working relationships with internal and external service providers and stakeholders.
  • Capacity to maintain up to date file records and data collection processes as required.
  • Current Working with Children Check valid for employment purposes.
