SMART InsideOut Program: Innovating a SMART approach to justice health continuation of care

SMART Recovery’s evidence-based program ’InsideOut’ supports participants in custody experiencing addictive behaviours. Our evaluation across six NSW prisons over a four-year period showed a significant reduction in recidivism. More recently, Casuarina Facility in Western Australia has been delivering SMART within the Solid-Steps Program showing efficacious outcomes since its inception. Collaborating with some key organisations, SMART aims to develop the program further to provide a more holistic continuation-of-care and create a more syncretic framework between Inside Out with our SMART Family and Friends program. This model will ensure more holistic family support for people in custody and their communities.

The presentation will explore SMART Recovery’s practice and research expertise and share recommendations to inform more comprehensive support and delivery of a through-care model for people experiencing addictive behaviours.
