LGBTIQ Cultural Competency and Response

November 23 @ 9:15 am

Australian and international research shows considerably higher rates of drug use among LGBTIQ populations compared to the general population, with rates of drug use in LGBTIQ communities more than double that of other communities.
Individuals from the LGBTIQ population frequently present at alcohol and other drug treatment agencies, having experienced a range of underlying issues which staff need to understand and manage. These issues include minority stress, stigma, discrimination, external and internalised homophobia and transphobia, all of which can negatively impact on their drug and alcohol use and mental health.
This training event is being hosted by VAADA and presented by Drummond Street Services. Drummond Street Services are aimed at improving the total health and wellbeing of clients and their families. It incorporates all specialist mental health services including; complex trauma, AOD, relationships, parenting, community, domestic and family violence and specialist LGBTIQ+ services.

Training objectives include:

  • Identify wellbeing risk factors for sexual and gender diverse
